If your AI model disappeared tomorrow, what would stop?
The AI Independence Check shows which of your AI jobs could move to another model, how likely that is to work, and who owns each one. Fixed fee. Remote. About three weeks.
You have hired a genius on a contract you do not control.
Your AI model does great work. But someone else sets the price, can change the terms, or can be stopped from turning up. Most businesses never asked which of their AI jobs really needed a genius. Many do not. You would not hire a rocket scientist to answer the phones.
You do not plan to leave. You just want to know where the exit signs are.
Three things you do not control.
Price
The model gets dearer, or the exchange rate does. Most businesses pay in US dollars.
Access
A model is withdrawn, blocked, or banned in Australia, or a provider changes who can use it.
Rules
A regulator, a customer or an insurer asks where your data goes and who answers for it.
In June 2026, access to two of Anthropic's newest models was suspended for about three weeks under US export controls, then restored. Anthropic statement
Most people talk about this worry. Very few have a plan.
A written answer to one question: if this model goes away, what breaks, and what is the fallback for each job?
- Job listEvery AI job in your business, ranked by money and by how much it would hurt to lose.
- Independence levelEach job rated Could move tomorrow, Could move with work, or Stuck for now, with our view of how likely the move is to work.
- Smallest model that should workThe right size of model for each job, so you are not paying for a genius where a smaller model will do.
- Test planThe 30 to 50 real tasks, the pass mark, and who scores it. Your team or a builder runs the test.
- Cost viewWhat you pay now against the likely cost of the smaller option, from published prices.
- Trigger planWhat to do if the price jumps, a model is withdrawn or access is blocked.
- Named ownerOne accountable person for each job.
- Builder briefA written brief your IT team or a partner can pick up. We stop before the build.
- One page answer and a 45 minute readout with the CEO.
Sometimes the honest answer is to stay where you are and note the exit. Running a model on infrastructure you control, often called sovereign AI, is one possible outcome, and only when the risk justifies the cost. A clear "not yet" is a valid result.
| AI job | Level | Smallest model that should work | Owner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sorting inbound emails | Could move tomorrow | Small model | Operations manager |
| Pulling data from invoices | Could move tomorrow | Small model | Finance lead |

| Drafting board papers | Could move with work | Mid size model, a person still edits | Company secretary |
| Reviewing contracts | Stuck for now | Needs the best model today | Legal counsel |
Every job also gets a test plan: the real tasks, the pass mark and who scores it.

Questions people ask.
We are just dealing with what we have.
That is fine. Most jobs stay where they are. The Check only shows the exit and what it would cost to use it.
Smaller models are not as good.
Nobody claims they beat the best models. They only need to be good enough for each job. We design the test on your own work and set the pass mark up front, so you can see it for yourself.
Isn't this just a backup plan?
A backup restores data. This shows which jobs need which model, and who owns each one.
Can't our IT team just do this?
IT can build the fallback. Someone still has to rank the jobs, set the pass mark and name the owner. That is the decision, and it is the part we do.
Do you build it?
No. We decide and direct. We give you a brief and a test plan. You, your IT team or a partner builds it.
